The story takes place in a world where we know the city of Erinada, whose territory belongs in one half to the Tseberun Dragon Empire and the other half to the Lapetodes Alliance of the Seven Cities. The two halves of the city are separated by the Orielal river. In this world there are abilities called "spell formulas", which are basically chemical reactions increased by the use of special weapons and that create an effect similar to a spell. These weapons are known as "Magic Rods", and there are all kinds of them. Formulators are those who use spell formulas to fight against "abhorrent beasts", creatures that use formulas and that are a threat to humanity such as the Dragons, the Aeons or the Huge ones.
In this world we meet Gaius Sorel and Gigina Ashley-Bufh, the only two employees of the Office of Formulistas Ashley-Bufh & Sorel Co., who receive requests of all kinds from their clients. Of course, they all need the skills of a formulator.
The series of novels was released in 2008 under the Sadoker Bunko label of Kadokawa, but was later released under the Gagaga Bunko label of Shogakukan. Volumes 1 and 2 of the current edition are revised and improved versions of the Sneaker Bunko originals, but from volume 3 the old material was completely rewritten. Both editions feature illustrations by Miyagi.
For now there are 20 volumes that the series has for sale in Japan and its volume 21 was released on March 20 in Japan.
