The story of the novel is told by an unnamed protagonist who finds a newspaper lost in a hospital. The newspaper turns out to belong to Sakura Yamauchi, a classmate, from whom she discovers that she suffers from a terminal illness in her pancreas and that she only has a few months of life expectancy. Sakura explains to the protagonist that he is the only one outside his family who knows his secret, but he promises not to tell anyone anything. Although both have opposite personalities, the protagonist decides to spend with Sakura his last months of life.
Sumino started the story on the web Shosetsu-ka ni Naro in 2014, Futabasha having published the physical volume in June 2015 with a cover illustrated by loundraw (character designer Tsuki ga Kirei). The novel and other books related to it amount to more than two million copies in circulation.
